Block of the Month October 2017

BLUE AND WHITE DONUT BLOCK

Earlier this year we had the blue and white Propeller block.
It was so versatile and your BOM contributions made SO many quilts.
Thank you for either sending the triangles or sewing them into squares ready to be
trimmed and cut to size for positioning in one of the quilts.
BOM VOLUNTEERS ARE WONDERFUL...THANK YOU FOR YOUR WORK

Blue and white quilts meet the Requests of our Air Force Recipients, our Navy Recipients and any Recipients who just love blue. They are signature colours for many sports teams our
Heroes request in their quilts.

This month you can choose how you use the blue and white fabrics
BUT
please use BLUE fabric...no aqua...no turquoise...no greyish blue...no greenish blue...no purplish blue
JUST BLUE
The blue fabrics can be light blue, dark blue or medium blue.  They can be striped, spotted, tone-on-tone, plain or printed with a pattern.
Remember that the majority of our Recipients are men and florals and "pretty" fabrics
might not be appreciated.
WHITE FABRIC
The white fabric can be plain or tone-on-tone

Fabrics should be 100% cotton

These are some colour placement variations you can choose from

Use 1/4 inch seam allowance

BLUE FABRIC
Cut four 7 x 7 inch squares

WHITE FABRIC
Cut four 5 x 5 inch squares
Cut four 3 3/4 x 3 3/4 inch squares

Draw a diagonal line on each of the 8 squares on the wrong side of the fabric

Position a small white square on the blue fabric, with right sides together and pin either side of the line, leaving room for the machine foot.  Sew along this line.

Remove pins and place ruler over the block as shown, and cut away the corner leaving a 1/4 inch seam allowance.  Sew a seam, as shown, on the off cut triangles.

Press the seams to one side on both squares

Position a large square on the opposite corner as shown, and sew on the diagonal line.

As before...
  • cut leaving 1/4 inch seam allowance
  • sew seam on off cut triangles
  • press seam allowance to one side on both pieces

Repeat with other cut pieces to make four of these squares
and eight of these

Put the 8 small squares aside ready for posting.  Please don't trim as they will be cut to exactly the size required to make bigger blocks and borders, by those making the quilts for our Heroes.

Lay out the four squares as shown, with the small white triangles in the centre of the block and the large triangles on the outside of the block.

Fold two of squares as shown and sew a seam where the two small triangles come together, making half the block
Repeat for the other half of the block

TIP
Lay out on the ironing board and iron the seam allowances in opposite directions as shown, as this will allow the seams to "nest" together when sewing, making it easier to match up the seams in the centre of the block

Sew the last seam of the block and press the seam allowances to one side

There you have it...the Blue Donut Block!
PDF Version available HERE.

Please send your block and the eight smaller blocks to

The wonderful AHQ sewing Team in Coffs Harbour will use your blocks to
make quilts according to the requests of our Heroes, to thank them for their Service
and show them they are honoured and remembered daily by Aussies at home.

THANK YOU
for being a part of this great venture.

Enjoy the beautiful Spring weather in this great South Land where we are blessed to
live, and until next month... happy sewing.

  1. I have lots of 'true blue' fabric as well as some great white. I'll try and make a few this week to bring to the next sewing day at Penrith.
